Galveston County’s new instructions for serving as a Volunteer Deputy Voter Registrar (VDR< VDVR) are somewhat confusing.  Here is what the rest of the email from Angel R. Odom says:
To become a Volunteer Deputy Registrar for Galveston County, you will need to complete the following;

-Fill out an application

-Complete the presentation from the Secretary of State

-Study the practice exam

-Call and schedule an appointment to take the exam in our Texas City office at 409-766-2280.

Once you have completed the exam with an 80% or more, we will provide you an Official Certificate and all of your documentation/supplies.
An application to become a VDR, as well as the Secretary of State presentation, and practice exam can be found on our Galvestonvotes.org website, under the Voter Registration tab.

LET ME SIMPLIFY THIS FOR YOU

If you are already a certified VDR for Galveston County, you do not have to do anything – you are good to go thru 12/2026 when your current certificate expires.

If you want to sign up now, the process is new.  You can not become a Galveston County VDR online.  You can apply, take the training and the practice exam online, (Galvestonvotes.org/ click voter registration, click Voter Deputy Registrar) but then you have to take the actual exam in Texas City.  Call them 409-766-2280 and make an appointment, (though I am told you can try to just show up, and if they are free, they can give you the exam, but they recommend calling ahead).

HOWEVER

If you would like to become a VDR, and find the above process daunting, or don’t want to travel to Texas City, you CAN take the Harris County VDVR class ONLINE here:  https://www.hctax.net/Voter/Deputy. Click the VDVR portal and follow the directions to get the zoom link, take the exam, fill out some paperwork and wait for your certificate in the mail. (some counties will send it to you in an email)

Once you receive your certificate from Harris county (or almost any other county that offers the exam online), print the application from Galvestonvotes.org, fill out that you have completed the training and the County where you you are certified and email the application and a copy of your Harris County certificate to angelr.odem@galvestoncountytx.gov.

We realize the value of our voice when we are silenced.
